The aim of this course is to confront memorial cultures in two European cities: on the one hand Münster, on the other Chernivci (Czernowitz), a city in the Ukrainian Bukovina which is not only, but particularly known for its enormously rich Jewish life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Students from Chernivci and Münster will work in Ukrainian-German tandems and in the English language on selected buildings in Chernivci and Münster belonging more or less to the same genre (churches, cemeteries, residential buildings, war memorials, town halls, Jewish heritage, etc.) from a historical, art historical and Eastern Church perspective. Münster students will investigate buildings in Chernivci and vice versa. The question will then be how (partial) social memory was tied to these buildings and to what extent they themselves have become significant places of remembrance in the sense of Pierre Nora's concept of lieus de mémoire and its further development. The appeal of the course is to compare memorial cultures in Münster and Chernivci, to elaborate the respective cultural peculiarities and to gain, via working in bi-national tandems to gain deeper insights into the other culture. At the end of the course, a small exhibition is planned in Chernivci and in Münster.
Students of the course can apply to participate in the DAAD-funded German-Ukrainian summer school ”Memory Cultures Using the Example of Bukovina”, which, in conjunction with free board and lodging, will take place at Landhaus Rothenberge from September 8-12, 2025, as well as in the presence of students from Chernivci in Münster until September 16. However, the course takes place independently of the summer school.
