In this seminar, we will not only explore the potentialities and limits of satire in theory and practice, but we will also read some of the most controversial poems and pamphlets by the Anglo-Irish writer Jonathan Swift, discuss their generic matrices, and reconstruct their historical, socio-political, and literary contexts. For the most part, we will focus on Swift's writings on Ireland in which he posits himself as the foremost eighteenth-century critic of Ireland's colonial status and reflect on Swift's lasting reputation as an Irish national figure up to the present day.
