Linear algebraic groups are algebraic subgroups of GL_n . We study the interplay of algebraic geometry with group theory and generalize familiar concepts from GL_n to arbitrary linear algebraic groups: Jordan decomposition, diagonalizable groups, solvable groups, Borel subgroups, semisimple elements. The goal of the lecture is to classify reductive groups by root data.
