In this course, our focus will be on exploring cutting-edge research in the field of religion that holds significant influence within the social sciences. The format of the course will be structured around readings, with each session dedicated to the analysis of a single article. Initially, all articles will be provided, but as the course progresses, participants will be encouraged to suggest readings based on certain criteria. Discussions in class will revolve around topics, research questions, research gaps filled by the article, methods and data, interpretation and discussion of results. For those with an interest in religion, the course will offer insights into contemporary debates within the sociology of religion, including topics such as the decline of religion in certain regions juxtaposed with its enduring significance in others. For those who may not (yet) share an interest in religion, the course will provide valuable exposure to state-of-the-art empirical research methods and enhance comprehension of academic article composition. Moreover, the course will serve as an opportunity for all participants to practice and refine their English language skills. Given that the texts under scrutiny will be in English, the course caters not only to proficient English speakers but also to those in the process of developing their language proficiency.
