The seminar deals with the question of how communication and society are changing against the backdrop of the increasing use of platforms such as Instagram, Google, and LinkedIn. The focus will be on the question of the consequences of leaving numerous data traces in the context of our everyday media practices. We will define the phenomenon of datafication, attempt to determine its social influence and identify fields in which it becomes effective.
We also discuss how datafication creates inequality between people of different genders or ethnicities and what ethical issues arise from this. We will look at ways of dealing with and responding to datafication, for example data activism.
The seminar is planned as an English-speaking course.
