Course description

This course aims to introduce the students to the concept of sustainability in applying it to the case of India. As this class doesn’t expect any broader knowledge of the Indian subcontinent, the course will start in introducing the students to the modern Indian society and current political challenges. Next to this, the class aims to introduce the students to several concepts for the study of sustainability, f.e. the three-pillar model and its criticism, strong and weak sustainability as well as Indian answers to current challenges like Radical Ecological Democracy and Ecoswaraj. Finally, we will have a closer look at several cases in India, covering the broader topics of India in global sustainability (and climate) politics and ecological activism in an intersectional perspective.
