The Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of this seminar is to explore the intricate dynamics between religion and politics in Turkey, particularly focusing on the emergence and evolution of Islamo-nationalism. By examining historical contexts, political shifts, and societal transformations, the seminar aims to shed light on the complex interplay between religious ideologies, nationalist sentiments, and political practices in shaping contemporary Turkey. The objective is to systematically analyze the causal relationships between discursive practices of leaders, societal events, and broader socio-cultural structures, aiming to understand the emergence and ideological underpinnings of hegemony. How the rhetoric of the "New Turkey" has been employed by the Justice and Development Party (AKP) to consolidate power, co-opt nationalist narratives, and legitimize its regime will be investigated. The political landscape of Turkey over the past eight years will be examined, with a focus on Erdogan's tenure and the legitimization strategies, including an analysis of his popularity and its implications for Turkish political culture.
