This discussion-based seminar focuses on a handful of memoirs penned by prominent historians who fled Nazi Germany and received the bulk of their educations in the United States. These scholars, most notably George Mosse, Peter Gay, and Raul Hilberg, were key figures in the disciplines of LGBT history, Holocaust history, and cultural history, but remain less known in their countries of birth. Their memoirs not only serve as autobiographical explorations of Bildung between Europe and the Americas, but also discuss the educational systems and experiences of both Nazi Germany and democratic America.

This seminar will be conducted in English and all assignments are expected to be conducted in English. International students are especially welcome! This is a reading-intensive seminar and students will be expected to participate in class discussions.
