This seminar focuses on educational history in the Southern United States between roughly 1898 and 1965. The South often fought political and cultural battles over segregation in the educational sector. This course will look at the history of segregation and education from multiple angles including pro-Confederate curricula, creationism, Black responses, and activism from the right. Memoirs like Lillian Smith’s Killers of a Dream will additionally provide personal context, but the bulk of the course will focus on how the White South taught generations to enforce white supremacy: with the lessons of their teachers, churches, and parents always in the back of their minds.

This seminar will be conducted in English and all assignments are expected to be conducted in English. International students are especially welcome! This is a reading-intensive seminar and students will be expected to participate in class discussions. All students seeking a grade will be expected to write a paper or sit for an oral exam on a historical topic.
