Since the publication of Art Spiegelman’s MAUS, historians, educators, and other scholars have debated the merits of depicting history, particularly difficult histories, in the comic format. This course looks at history education via comics/graphic novels from a public history perspective. Time periods covered include the Ancient World, the US Civil War, Weimar Germany, the Holocaust, and Hurricane Katrina. This course will examine the challenges and opportunities encountered when depicting difficult history through this popular format and discuss the reception of key works discussed throughout the semester.
