Course Objective

The course ”Core Topics in Geographic Information Science” focuses on presenting and discussing foundational ideas of the discipline of Geoinformatics. We will do so from the perspectives of the focus areas of four research groups in the Institute for Geoinformatics. The group leaders will discuss how their research area touches upon fundamental aspects of Geoinformatics, focusing on the following themes:

Geoinformatics and GI Science; the role of data (Pebesma); Geosimulation (Verstegen) Vector Geometries and Qualitative Spatial Reasoning (Schwering) Visualisation of and Interaction with geographic information (Kray) The form in which we will do this is by providing 1 or 2 scientific papers before every meeting, which will be introduced, summarized, and discussed by the course participants.

Grading

Evaluation will be based on active participation in discussions and meetings, and a final written assignment. Students are expected to read carefully and critically each of the references, and to contribute to the discussion how these references have contributed to the advancement of Geoinformatics as a scientific discipline.
