This course offers students from literary and cultural studies a first foray into theories and models from book studies and material culture. Special attention will be given to concepts such as bookishness (Jessica Pressman) and paratexts (Gérard Genette). A central outcome of the course will be to sensitize students for the significance of material culture. By the end of the semester, they will be able to apply a set of these approaches and tools.
