This discussion-based seminar compares the research field and practices of public history in both Germany and the US. Starting with the origins and definitions of the field--and its educational goals, this course will then discuss current public history controversies in both countries, focusing especially on Confederate Monuments in the American South and debates over renaming the University of Münster. In terms of public history practice, the class will explore various types of public history, ranging from museum exhibits to podcasts and television productions. This seminar includes a walking tour of First World War memorials in Münster as well as a visit to the Villa ten Hompel, a local Holocaust memorial and education center.

This seminar will be conducted in English and all assignments are expected to be conducted in English. International students are especially welcome! This is a reading-intensive seminar and students will be expected to participate in class discussions.
