This course examines the American sociologist and historian James Loewen’s 1995 book Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, controversies surrounding it, and its legacy as a classic—and popular—work of educational, activist scholarship. Students are expected to read the entire book and discuss it weekly.

Because this course is structured around the book, students are expected to purchase copies of Lies My Teacher Told Me. This course will be conducted in English and use English-language literature. Students are expected to write a paper or sit for an oral exam on a historical topic.
