Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, den Studierenden einen Überblick über die Grundlagen der Syntax zu bieten. Wir fangen mit der Delimitierung des eigentlichen Gebietes der Syntax, dem schwer greifbaren Begriff des Satzes, an, wie auch mit den Hauptrelationen, durch die syntaktische Konstruktionen definiert werden, der Konstituenz und der Dependenz. Eingehend werden grundlegende Bereiche der Syntax wie Konstituentenstruktur, Aufbau und Eigenschaften unterschiedlicher Phrasentypen, Konstruktionen, Dependenzrelationenen und grammatische Rollen behandelt. Weitere Bereiche sind Wortstellung, Subordination vs. Koordination und appositive Relationen. In den letzten Sitzungen wird näher auf das Verhältnis zwischen Syntax und Morphologie, Semantik und Lexikon eingegangen.
The purpose of the course is to provide an overview of the basic concepts and methods of syntax. We will begin by delimiting the actual field of syntax, the evasive notions of sentence and clause, as well as introducing the main relations that define syntactic structures and constructions, constituency and dependence. After that, we shall focus on the fundamental syntactic phenomena such as constituent structure, the properties and the structural domains of different phrase types, constructions, dependency relations and grammatical roles. Further domains include word order, subordination, coordination, appositive relations, etc. In the end of the course, the relationship between syntax, morphology, semantics and the lexicon will be tackled.
