You like good food? You enjoy eating (and possibly having a nice glass of something to drink to go with it)? You maybe even like to cook? And you like analyzing language? Then, this is just the right seminar for you. The study of language related to food opens up many fascinating avenues for research. In this seminar, we will, for instance, consider lexical questions, such as where the vocabulary in the field of food and cooking comes from and how (and why) varieties of English differ in this respect. We will analyze the structural and functional characteristics of recipes and food blogs, look at how professionals and laypersons talk about food and cooking and how they describe taste, we will examine advertisements for food and food packaging (which will also include the analysis of pictorial material). In addition, we will discuss the relationship between food, language and culture, and address questions of food ideology reflected in discourses about food, cooking and eating (e.g. food and nutrition/health/weight issues, veganism, organic food, etc.).
