In many countries, there are complaints about a political divide in society and citizens of democracies losing their common ground. At the same time, there is an upsurge of social movements on issues such as the climate crisis or the pandemic. But how are citizens politicized in the first place? What drives them into the streets or makes them stay at home on election day? We will discuss theories and research findings on these very questions. The semester will be divided into four blocks: 1. Ideologies and Institutions; 2. Political Culture and Democracy; 3. Political Education; 4. Social Movements. The class will be conducted entirely in English, including the papers that you will write. In addition to regular attendance, weekly reading of literature is expected.
