This seminar is dedicated to students who are planning to become primary school teachers of English. It will explore, in detail, the potential(s) of English children's literature for the young learners' English classroom. We'll start by taking a closer look at English children's book and with a detailed analysis of how to choose them wisely. Based on that, we'll go into details with how to integrate these books into the young learners' English classroom. Roughly speaking, this will be seperated into the two approaches of independent reading and storytelling. Both approaches will be explored in detail so that students get a good idea of how to plan lessons and units based on picture books. In the second part of the semester, this knowledge will be put into practice by designing a lesson that is based on a picture book for a primary school English classroom. These lessons will be taught in selected primary schools in and around Muenster and will eventually be reflected on by the students in cooperation with the English teachers of the respective classes as well as with Prof. Reckermann. Throughout the seminar, we'll also build up a digital resource pool of useful picture books to be used in the primary school English classroom.
