In this class, we will deepen the methodological as well as theoretical knowledge acquired in the foundational module by applying it to two Victorian novels. We will read and discuss Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). We will investigate these two novels through the lenses of both literary history and various theoretical approaches (e.g., feminist theory, queer theory, postcolonial theory, genre theory) in order find out what such readings may bring to our understanding of these texts. We will also consider adaptations of the novels.
