In this seminar we will investigate the integration of immigrants and their descendants in Europe and focus on the role of religion in explaining integration processes. The seminar will start with an introduction to integration theories. We will then learn that integration can take place on different integration dimensions (e.g., socioeconomic, social, and cultural integration). In addition, since previous studies emphasize the crucial role of ethnic majorities in the integration processes of minorities, we will examine discriminatory behavior and attitudes of majorities toward immigrants. We will read and discuss both theoretical and empirical studies.
