Commentary Text:

Environmental Change does not only become prevalent in discussions about climate change, loss of biodiversity, and land use change but is increasingly also discussed in relation to manifested forms of violence in human and human-nature relations.

The aim of this course is to gain a deeper understanding of these conflictual and potentially violent contemporary dynamics that are related to environmental change. We will discuss different forms of violence, conflicts, and peacebuilding as well as respective societal and political dynamics in the realm of local, regional, and global environmental change to better understand their underlying causes and processes. Additionally, we will discuss the dynamics of inequalities, exclusion, or colonial continuities in their relation to environmental change from a wider perspective of sustainability to better understand the structures that create and manifest power and forms of violence. To gain a broader perspective, we will look at these aspects from different disciplinary perspectives, amended by insights from decolonial studies.
