The "Worlds of Journalism" study is the largest comparative study ever conducted in the history of communication studies. After a pilot phase (2007-2011) and a second wave conducted in 67 countries around the world (2012-2016), the third field phase for "WJS 3" is currently underway. In this seminar, we will explore the concept of journalistic cultures that underlies the study, reflect on its findings, but also look at the methodology and the cultural as well as political challenges that such a large project entails. Collaborators from different continents will be invited to reflect with us (via Zoom) on the challenges for journalists in the countries they study, but also to explain the challenges for researchers. If you are interested in journalism, research on journalism, and how political and cultural conditions around the globe affect both, this seminar might be a good choice for you.

The seminar will be completed with a term paper or, alternatively, a thesis paper plus oral discussion; presentations are planned as coursework ("Studienleistung"). Only MA students of the Department of Communication or international students of the Faculty of Social Sciences (Erasmus) can be admitted to the seminar.
