This seminar explores the history, role and use of English in Scotland. We will investigate the history of English and other languages spoken in Scotland, discover the current status of English in Scotland and the attitudes speakers have towards it, and we will explore the specific properties of the Scottish English phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon. This seminar requires you to take part in a small research group project on English in Scotland, whose results will be presented in class.
