Welcome to the introductory lecture course "Text, Book & Culture" for M.A. (and equivalent) students. Some of the questions we will deal with this semester are: What is a text? What is a book? What role do books and texts play in (Anglophone) cultural history? Book Studies comprises the fields of Book History and Publishing Studies, and we will concern ourselves with central texts from both fields, as well as theories and models that are applicable to these areas of research. With the goal of achieving an overview, we will discuss the progress of texts and books ”from scrolls to scrolling,” focusing on Anglophone book history and today’s global Anglophone book industry.
