This seminar explores the impact of the Great Depression and Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal on in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s through the lens of education. This course will serve both as an introduction to the history of the 1930s and as an introduction to the New Deal’s impact on the United States and education. For its architects, education for democracy was not a problem simply to be left up to the schools, but a society-wide goal. Through the combined efforts of public radio, newsreels, travel guidebooks, and work relief programs, New Dealers sought to keep American democracy afloat in an age of dictators.

This seminar will be conducted in English and all assignments are expected to be conducted in English. International students are especially welcome! This is a reading-intensive seminar and students will be expected to participate in class discussions. All students seeking a grade will be expected to write a paper or sit for an oral exam on a historical topic.
