The Victorians have acquired a reputation for being prim and prudish that literary and cultural theory are trying to revoke. We will participate in the discussion by reading allegedly sexless text for their hidden sexual meanings by means of a variety of literary theories including psychoanalytic theory, feminist theory and queer theory. If you choose this group, please read Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886) before the start of term. I will provide you with a variety of excerpts from both theoretical and literary texts as we go along, including Jane Eyre (1847), Great Expectations (1860–1861) and Dracula (1897), so you are very welcome to read those novels in advance, but there is no obligation to do so. Our first meeting will be on April 12, 2023.
