This class looks at the history of the US university system in the long 1960s. It will not only explore student activist movements, particularly the Civil Rights and anti-war movements, but also look at wider developments within higher education during this period, whether in scholarship, the 1970s economic crisis, desegregation, or the rise of student loans. It will also pay attention to developments among conservative students, an often-overlooked but important student group during this period. Through this group, we will look at their impact on the Barry Goldwater presidential campaign and the resurgence of conservative politics in the United States.
