In this class, we will focus on the global spread of English. You will get acquainted with different theoretical models of World Englishes. We will then focus on individual varieties of English and their linguistic features as well as the corresponding sociolinguistic situations. We will also have a look at the role of World Englishes in German-speaking contexts. Throughout the semester we will analyse authentic data from different sources (e.g. corpus data, literary texts or online forums), and different methods will be introduced (particularly in language attitude research and corpus linguistics).
