Pragmatics is interested in language in context or speaker meaning. It examines the relationship between the meaning of an utterance and the context in which the utterance is produced. It therefore focuses on the regularities of language use and a range of phenomena that cannot completely be accounted for by other linguistic fields (such as syntax, semantics, phonology). The course will focus on pragmatic phenomena in the context of computer-mediated communication, for example, interactions that can be found in social media and other internet sites and mobile phone applications.
