This course is dedicated to the "craft" of English language education: analysing and designing school materials with the background of English language educational research. The first part of the course focusses on assessing textbooks using quality criteria and deals with aspects of differentiation, inter- and transcultural learning and competence-oriented curricula. In the second part, students learn how to design motivating and challenging complex competence-oriented tasks based on theory from their English language education course(s). In doing so, this course also deals with aspects of inclusion.

The special focus of this MAD course is multimodality. As such, the texts and materials used for illustration and examination will feature various forms of meaning-making, including audio and audio-visual (e.g., films).
