As Nigeria has become a key topic in English Language Teaching in Germany, this class provides an introduction on how to use Nigeria as an example for New English variety in English Language Teaching. The class specifically focus on linguistic issues but also covers cultural aspects and Nigerian literature. Students first learn about the sociolinguistic situation in Nigeria and get to know Nigerian English and Pidgin English. We will then discuss the Global Englishes Language Teaching approach as a general framework to include Nigeria in ELT. We will first analyze existing teaching material critically and discuss how to design complementary materials using literature, films/documentaries, TED talks, and music.
The seminar starts in the first week of the lecture period.
