This self-study course guides the students in a structured manner through a number of external video, audio, text and software resources, so that they will be able to self-study the topic of Modelling at the atomic scale for experimentalists. Example topics are an introduction to the theoretical investigation of atomic scale systems including (macro-)molecules; overview of basic modelling techniques and common software packages; as well as a guide to formulate problems for theoreticians and to properly understand the results afterwards. The course should thus enable experimentalists to understand what theoreticians are doing and how this can be useful for their own experimental research, with the goal of promoting interdisciplinary communication and research between theory and experiment. To facilitate easy access, as little math as possible is used throughout the course.
