Each of the major religious traditions in the world is challenged to interpret the fact of religious diversity, to clarify its own self-understanding in the face of this diversity and to reflect on its relations to other religions. The course will introduce briefly to how religious diversity was understood traditionally in Hinduism and in Buddhism. Its main focus, however, will be on more recent attempts. In particular it will pursue the question of whether it is possible to develop pluralistic approaches in Hinduism and Buddhism, that is, approaches which understand other religions as different but nevertheless equally valid path of salvation.
