Questions are commonly defined as acts of requesting information from the interlocutors. Typically, they correspond to dedicated linguistic structures – “interrogatives”. However, a closer inspection of the concept and the respective grammatical structure against natural discourse often challenges the basic definitions. In this seminar, we will explore various functional approaches to the issue and explore examples from naturally occurring speech to investigate the phenomenon of information requests and the functions of interrogatives.
