The class will cover a range of topics in sociolinguistics – the field of study that explores the inter-relation between language and society. We will discuss the current ideas and findings of the field, examining such topics as linguistic variation and its social underpinnings, language and culture, social networks and language use, and language contact and its interrelation with linguistic typology.
