This lecture provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of pragmatics. The class introduces basic principles of pragmatics and then zooms into specific pragmatic subfields, including speech act theory, Conversation Analysis, and discourse markers. The lecture emphasizes cultural and regional variation in pragmatic phenomena along the fields of intercultural and variational pragmatics. The lecture will include several examples of current research projects in the field of pragmatics. Students will learn how to use corpora and surveys to conduct (variational) pragmatic research themselves. We will discuss pragmatic issues in relation to English Language Teaching.
