Forscher scheinen sich nicht einig zu sein, was der eigentliche Gegenstand der Pragmatik ist: Ist es jede Art von kontextabhängiger Bedeutung, nur nicht-wahrheitskonditionale Bedeutung, oder ganz allgemein der Gebrauch der sprachlichen Zeichen an sich? Das Ziel der Veranstaltung ist es, die Bandbreite der Phänomene, die normalerweise unter die Rubrik 'Pragmatik' fallen, darzustellen, und dadurch den Studierenden einen Einblick in diese komplexe Teildisziplin der Linguistik zu ermöglichen. Das besondere Augenmerk wird den in der sprachphilosophischen Tradition verankerten Themen wie Implikatur, Sprechakte und Präsupposition gelten, es werden aber auch solche Phänomene besprochen, die eher rhetorischer oder soziolinguistischer Natur sind, wie Ironie, Höflichkeit, Konversationsregeln u. ä. Am Ende sollen auch einige neuere Entwicklungen in formaler und experimenteller Pragmatik kurz angesprochen und kritisch hinterfragt werden.
There is no consensus on the question of what pragmatics actually deals with. While some consider its object to be any kind of context-sensitive meaning, others confine the field of pragmatics to non-truth-conditional meaning only. Others yet define pragmatics as the general theory of the use of linguistic sings of any kind. The purpose of this course is to introduce the phenomena that traditionally fall under the label ‘pragmatics’ irrespective of the unresolved definitional issues and provide an overview of this complex linguistic discipline. Attention will be paid both to the topics stemming from language philosophy (literal vs. non-literal meaning, implicature, speech acts, or presupposition) and to rhetorical and sociolinguistic topics (irony, politeness, conversation rules, etc.). At the end of the course some recent developments in formal and experimental pragmatics will be broached and critically evaluated.
