Students will explore Greek and Roman ideas and attitudes regarding friendship. In the texts of Homer, Aristotle, Demosthenes, Cicero, and more, this exercise will examine how close relationships are envisaged, the role of such relationships in political society of that day, the institution of guest-friendship, and what place, if any, recognizable interpersonal affection between peers had in the ancient Mediterranean.
