Photonics deals with the generation, amplification, transmission and harnessing of light for technological applications in a wide variety of fields. Photonics is therefore considered one of the most promising areas for information processing, biotechnology, and nanotechnology.

Starting from the principle of the laser, this introduction will focus on the fundamentals of light propagation, the interaction of light with matter, and photonic components and devices. This will include physical principles as well as a number of current applications.

Lecture topics will include: light propagation in air and media, wave optics, waveguiding, Fourier optics, polarization optics, lasers and resonators, short pulse optics, interferometry, coherence and holography, electro-optic devices, photonic switches and crystals, optical data storage and transmission. The lecture will focus on the fundamentals and selected experiments of photonics.
