This course explores some of the ways in which women shape and are shaped by religion in contemporary Africa. We will take a thematic approach, exploring issues such as education, environmental care, health/healing, disability, and human rights. We will also investigate how these themes emerge for African women in diaspora. Of special note is that in this course we will be joined by guest lecturers from several African countries who focus on different aspects of religion, women’s rights, and gender activism. This course may be of interest to students wishing to consider the role of women in religion from a global perspective, as well as those wanting to learn more about religion and contemporary issues in Africa.
