Current linguistic research is characterised by highly diverse theoretical landscape. Different schools of linguistic thought often disagree about the very basic principles of the field, offering opposing views on what constitutes a linguistic theory and what is the primary object of linguistic research. Each linguistic tradition encompasses a broad array of theoretical views with their own traditions, concepts and views on language and its analysis. In this class we will survey various linguistic theories that shaped the discipline and influence the modern research, with a particular emphasis on functional approaches.
