Diese Vorlesung soll über grundlegende Aspekte von Sprache und Sprachwissenschaft informieren. Dabei werden sprachwissenschaftliche Grundbegriffe vermittelt sowie Arbeitstechniken und Hilfsmittel vorgestellt, die für das weitere Studium unerlässlich sind. Die Einführung in die allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft behandelt theoretische Grundlagen der Sprachwissenschaft sowie die Beschreibungsmethoden auf den Ebenen der Phonetik/Phonologie, Morphologie, Syntax, Semantik und Pragmatik. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der sprachlichen Diversität: Alle zu behandelnden Phänomene werden aus der sprachvergleichenden Perspektive erläutert, wobei sowohl europäische als auch weniger bekannte und erforschte „exotische“ Sprachen zur Geltung kommen. Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt, mit dem sich die Vorlesung befasst, ist die Funktion der Sprache in der Kommunikation und der Vergleich der natürlichen menschlichen Sprachen mit anderen symbolischen Systemen.
This course is intended to provide basic information on the foundational aspects of language and linguistics. It will introduce basic linguistic notions and the methodological and technical tools to do linguistics, all of which are essential in the further study of languages. Introduction to General Linguistics tackles the theoretical foundations of linguistics as well as the descriptive techniques at the levels of phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Special attention will be paid to linguistic diversity: all the phenomena to be dealt with will be explained from a cross-linguistic perspective, adducing both European and less-known and under-investigated ‘exotic’ languages. Another important aspect to be elaborated upon is the function of language in communication and the comparison of natural human languages with other symbolic systems.
