Xenophon of Athens was a Soldier, Historian, and Philosopher whose works, while held in high esteem in antiquity, suffered in the 20th century and are only now being rehabilitated. As an oligarch among democrats, a mercenary deep in Asia, a friend to Socrates, and more, his wide-ranging experiences and interests serve as an ideal lens by which to gain a broad understanding of the world of Athens in the 5th and 4th Centuries BC. Students will gain familiarity with the various writings of Xenophon and his historical and social context. Texts to be discussed include the Anabasis, Hellenica, Oeconomicus, Ways and Means, and more. Also discussed will be further texts that provide context or useful mirrors.
