In this course, we will cover a lot of territory geographically and historically as we explore Africa’s critical role in developing the Christian faith culturally, intellectually, and theologically, from its earliest beginnings until the present-day. From Roman North Africa to cross-cultural missionary encounters and inter-religious engagement, to the rise of African Independent Churches and Pentecostalism, we will encounter many key individuals and observe waves of Christian expansion and recession across the continent. Key themes within this course include: the role of women in African Christianity; inter-religious engagement and conflict between Christianity, African Indigenous Religion, and Islam; interactions between politics and religion; and the impact of European colonial and missionary enterprises on religion in Africa.
