In the past decades, international legal rules, agreements and institutions have spread. This course asks why and how states create international law and how international law (IL) structures international relations (IR). We first review major theoretical perspectives on IL in IR, which emphasize different explanations for the state’s move to international law. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective of IR and IL, we then turn to important questions, such as the design of international legal institutions, compliance with international legal rules, the rise of international courts, the evolution of transnational law, and the legitimacy of international law. Finally, we discuss recent developments of backlash against international law and international courts.

This seminar will be organized as block course in January 2020.
