John Locke was one of the most influential philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment. His ideas shaped the discourse of politics and education throughout the eighteenth century. Accordingly, he has been perceived as the quintessential English intellectual. However, few people are aware of the fact that Locke developed his ideas on education mostly in the Netherlands where he spent the time of his exile between 1683 and 1689. This seminar will explore Locke’s ideas on education while looking at his life’s circumstances as a refugee and resident of such venerable Dutch cities as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Leiden, Deventer and Utrecht.
