More specifically, we will explore how security problems and global threats are perceived and approached from a political, social, economic and military perspective.

The seminar comprises of two parts:

1)      One introductory session into some of the theoretical approaches of peace and conflict studies, the status and ethics of violence and the use of force in international relations at the Institute of Political Science (WWU) (07.06.2019).

2)      Summer School (June 24 – 27, 2019) in cooperation with the 1st German/Netherlands Corps in Münster at its Headquarter (Münster).

The summer school in cooperation with the 1st German/Netherlands Corps allows students to get into touch with first-hand perceptions, perspectives and opinions of military personnel. This context is a rare opportunity for critical discussions. Thematically the summer school will focus on civil-military cooperation and on political, cultural and gender aspects of conflict management in the case of Sahel Africa. We will hear inputs of different experts from civil society and academia on the respective topics. Students will also participate in small simulations and crisis scenarios during the summer school in order to experience the combining efforts of civil and military actors in a post-conflict situation first-hand. The presentations during the summer school are partly in German and party in English.

All students are required to read the compulsory readings and choose a theme for an essay (“Hausarbeit”) according to the examination regulation.

Additionally all students will take part in the Summer School and actively participate in the simulations and discussions.

The number of participants from Münster University is limited to 15 persons. The summer school will also be attended by students from the OTH Regensburg.
