Over the past few years, “Game of Thrones” has been one of the most successful TV-series worldwide. It is mainly set in the fictitious world of Westeros, which in many respects resembles the world of the European Middle Ages. In a first step, the course will analyse the (pseudo)-Medieval world portrayed in the series; we will examine certain aspects such as politics, rituals, warfare, religion and society and look to what extent these aspects correspond to our academic knowledge of the European Middle Ages. In a second step, the course will analyse both the image the series conveys of the Middle Ages and the impact this image has on the popular view of the Middle Ages.

Course requirements: regular attendance, active oral participation, presentation of a paper.

The course will be held in English. Students must sign up for the course in room number 145. Participation is limited to 35 students.
