Anthropological Linguistics is concerned with language and speech in its social and cultural contexts. Language is regarded as a cultural resource, speaking as a cultural practice. A special interest for researchers in this discipline has been on rather small and “exotic” language communities. The study of cultural and linguistic diversity of the world’s societies especially in a globalized world with English as its lingua franca is crucial for an understanding of the conditio humana.
Anthropological linguistics covers a wide range of topics: Origin of language, language change, linguistic diversity, social interaction, cultural practices, language and cognition, language and gender, metaphors and conceptualizations, classificatory systems etc. This course will provide an introduction into basic concepts, topics and methodology of anthropological linguistics.
Anthropologische Linguistik befasst sich mit Sprache und Sprechen in ihren sozialen und kulturellen Kontexten. Sprache wird als kulturelle Ressource verstanden, Sprechen als kulturelle Praxis. Dabei galt seit Etablierung des Faches das Hauptinteresse eher kleineren und „exotischen“ Sprachgemeinschaften. Gerade in Zeiten der Globalisierung und dem Englischen als globale Lingua franca bietet der Blick auf die sprachliche und kulturelle Vielfalt der Welt ein neues Verständnis für die conditio humana.
Die Themen der anthropologischen Linguistik sind breit gefächert: Sprachursprung und –wandel, sprachliche Diverstität, soziale Interaktion, kulturelle Praktiken, Sprache und Kognition, Sprache und Gender, Metaphern und Konzeptualisierungen, Klassifizierung etc. Das Seminar versteht sich als Einführung in das Fach und bietet einen Überblick über die grundlegenden Begriffe, Gegenstände und Methoden der anthropologischen Linguistik.
