In this Seminar, we will engage with two Shakespearean plays - The Tempest and Othello - from a postcolonial perspective. Critically reading these texts in the light of their early colonial backgrounds and their postcolonial criticisms, we will engage critically with issues of race, gender, sexuality, and power in these plays. We will also (briefly) engage with two postcolonial re-writings of these plays, which we will read/watch in excerpts: Aimé Césaire' Une Tempête ("A tempest") and Murray Carlin's "Not Now, Sweet Desdemona".

Please read both The Tempest and Othello in advance; please purchase the **Norton Critical Editions**.
